Ingredients
  

Main
  • 2 ounces fresh grapefruit juice
  • 1.5 ounces vodka
  • 0.75 ounce simple syrup equal parts sugar and water, cooled
  • 2 ounces sparkling water or club soda
  • Ice cubes
  • Grapefruit slice or twist for garnish
  • Pinch of sea salt optional

Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker or mason jar with lid
  • Citrus juicer or reamer
  • Jigger or measuring spoon
  • Cocktail strainer
  • Bar spoon or long spoon
  • Highball glass or rocks glass
  • Cutting board and knife

Method
 

  1. Cut your grapefruit in half and juice it using a citrus reamer or juicer, pressing firmly to extract as much liquid as possible.
  2. Add a generous handful of ice to your cocktail shaker or mason jar.
  3. Pour 2 ounces of fresh grapefruit juice into your shaker with the ice, measuring carefully with a jigger.
  4. Add 1.5 ounces of vodka to the shaker.
  5. Measure out 0.75 ounce of cooled simple syrup and add it to the shaker.
  6. Close your shaker and shake hard for 10 to 15 seconds to mix and chill the ingredients.
  7. Using a cocktail strainer, pour the mixture into a highball or rocks glass filled with fresh ice.
  8. Add 2 ounces of sparkling water or club soda to top off your drink.
  9. Garnish with a grapefruit slice or twist and serve immediately.

Notes

Serve chilled with fresh ingredients. Adjust simple syrup amount to taste. To make a mocktail, omit vodka and add extra sparkling water plus a squeeze of fresh lime juice.
